Five must-see movies of summer 2017

Movies play a big role in the free time of West Ottawa students. With summer coming up, WO students will have plenty of free time. Here are the top five most anticipated movies of Summer 2017:


Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Release date: May 5, 2017

This sequel kicks off the summer with a continuance of the team’s adventures around the outer reaches of the cosmos. Fan-favorite characters from the classic Marvel comics work together to discover Peter Quill’s true parentage. This adventure is not reliant upon the previous film, and is an adventure, comedy, and science-fiction movie all in one. It is great for all different movie tastes. “I don’t dig movies that much but Marvel movies are always good. My dad and I are pretty hyped for the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie,” Soph. Ryan VanWyk said.


Captain Underpants

Release date: June 2, 2017

Kevin Hart and Thomas Middleditch play two overly-imaginative pranksters who hypnotically convince their principal, Mr. Krupp, that he is Captain Underpants in the first family comedy of the summer. Based off of the book, this will be a hit for all of the teens and kids that read the book in elementary school.“I know I’m not ten, but I used to read these books in elementary school so this movie is going to be so lit. I need to find a guy to take me on a date to see it. Kevin Hart is uber funny too,” Soph. Hannah Piersma said.


Cars 3

Release Date: June 16, 2017

The famous Lightning McQueen is being pushed towards retirement after a steady decline in wins. He looks for help in two rookie racers that aid his attempt for a win in the Florida 500. This movie is the perfect combinations of beloved characters and a fresh story, making it perfect for all ages. ¨My little brother Nick’s birthday is June 16th so I’m taking him and his friends to see it on his birthday. They’re all super excited,” Sr. Raina Piersma said.


Rough Night

Release Date: June 16, 2017

  Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Ilana Glazer, and Zoe Kravitz play five best friends from college that reunite for a wild bachelorette party in Miami. All goes hilariously well until they find themselves accidentally killing a male stripper. While trying to cover it up, they are ultimately brought closer together. “I consider myself a feminist and this movie has a lot of strong women in it so it’ll be really funny to see them out of their element,” Soph. Zoe Phommachit said.



Release Date: July 21, 2017

In May of 1940, Germany invades France and traps France’s allies on the beaches of Dunkirk. Over the course of two months, 330,000 French, British, Belgian, and Dutch troops slowly and methodically escaped from these beaches. The Battle of Dunkirk is a real battle from WWII, and but is spiced with dramatic relationships and celebrity Harry Styles to appeal to all ages. “Let’s be real. Dunkirk is the only [movie] that matters and it only matters because Harry Styles is in it. I’m going with my dad; he wants to see it because it’s a World War II movie,” Soph. Brianna Gomez said.
