Sr. Jayden Rattanasamay arrives at school at 9:30 pm after a long Boys Varsity Wrestling meet. He heads to Planet Fitness for a quick recovery lift and stretch, preparing to bounce back for the next intense practice. He finally gets home and takes a warm shower washing off the sweat and bacteria. He’ll finally be able to settle down and cook something light to eat. While eating a small bowl of pasta with a side of steamed vegetables, he does what he can with homework while also trying to study for any upcoming tests. Finally, around 12:30 am, he gets ready for bed, only to wake up six hours later and go to school the next day.
Creating a set schedule for school and personal life can be difficult for students who are also trying to manage time, stay motivated, maintain well-being and mental health. With the expectation of academic responsibilities, extracurricular activities, and social commitments, finding a balance between these aspects can be overwhelming.
Managing Time:
The first step, Rattanasamay sets clearly defined goals. He then makes a list on his phone of what needs to be accomplished by the end of the week. This is so he is reminded why he must stay focused. Rattanasamay said, “The way I stay balanced with school and sports is simply time management. Throughout the school day, I try to complete as much work as possible to avoid doing it late at home. Throughout my classes, I can identify which ones will be the easiest for me to complete.” Rattanasamay prioritizes his tasks. He adds all-time for classes, study sessions, and personal activities. He then limits all distractions. By the end of the week, he reviews what got done, and is ready to adjust his schedule if needed.
Staying Motivated:
Rattanasamay creates a routine, helping him stay on track so that the tasks feel more manageable. Rattanasamay said, “I stay motivated by telling myself, I want it more than anyone else. That mindset helps me push further than what I think I can handle. I make sure that when I go home I am satisfied with what I accomplished that day.” Rattanasamay notices his small wins and appreciates the progress made. This effortlessly enhances his confidence and motivation, fueling his drive to excel. Rattanasamay stays inspired by surrounding himself with others who are positive and listening to energetic music. While doing so he also takes care of himself. By prioritizing proper sleep, maintaining a healthy diet, and of course, exercising regularly, he sets himself up for success.
Maintaining Mental Health:
Rattanasamay said, “My mental health with wrestling and school was completely exhausting on and off the mats. I love the sport and was determined to give everything I had. I pushed through every barrier given. It’s difficult trying to maintain a sport and school work.” Rattanasamay discovered ways to manage the negative effects of his responsibilities, knowing that his passion for the sport was a vital part of his life and that giving up was never an option. Staying connected with others and finding ways to maintain his mental health was just as important. Seeing that he was able to inspire others and become an example to his fellow athletes pushed him to stick to be the best.
