The strangest competition

The strangest competition

Currently, schools around the district are in a competition to conserve energy, but is anyone actually trying? Several students who go to schools in our district are also confused about the Energy War. Jr. Hayden Bakker from Holland Christian said, “Administration announces it almost every day, but students don’t really do anything besides recycle.” Soph. Mercedez Laaksonen from Holland Public Schools said, “I’ve heard of Energy Wars, but students don’t really do anything.” Sr. Natalie Garza from West Ottawa said, “I have heard about Energy Wars, but I don’t really do anything to conserve energy at school. Most of what I do is at home, and from what I’ve heard, this is true for the majority of the student body.”

Students are recycling and shutting computers down, but we’ve been doing things like that before this competition, which makes this attempt to save energy a fail. With student broadcasting networks and people posting expensive color posters, people are not doing much to conserve energy.

Georgetown University and the city of Holland is sponsoring this competition. The winner of the Energy Wars competition will win iPads, Fitbits, and other cool prizes, but from what little students are doing, is anyone actually winning this competition? Students have until March 30 to make a difference.
