In a cozy loving home in town, Sr. Ahmorah Powell’s hair salon has become a beloved local gem, proving that big dreams can start in the smallest of spaces. Powell’s room, decorated with cheetah print and earth green vines and a mixed vibe of ruby red cherries attracts her clients into this special atmosphere. The scent of fresh coconut butter, floral mousse, and R&B music flowed throughout the room. Powell initially pursued hairdressing out of passion, her dedication to her craft, and her inspiration from her mother along with YouTube tutorials, but now, financial gains are the primary driver.
Beauty comes in many different forms, a lot of the time people feel the most confident when they look their best. Powell’s dedication goes beyond just providing a service; she strives to enhance her clients’ self-esteem and confidence, ensuring they leave her salon feeling their absolute best. Powell’s artistry in hair design not only transforms appearances but also has powerful results. Powell has dedicated her free time to doing hair and has committed to starting her own business at home. “I love seeing my clients’ faces light up when I give them the mirror to see the final product,” Powell said.
Powell’s unique setup comes from her inspiration from YouTube videos. “As a little girl, I would watch videos from my favorite content creators. I appreciated the different cultures being uplifted and knew I wanted to create a similar space. Designing my space so my clients feel welcome and comfortable as soon as they enter is important to me. Fortunately, I’ve been able to attend the Careline Tech Center program for Business Management; where I’ve learned about the process of how a business is run. The desire to create my own was lingering in my mind and that’s where I came up with the idea of doing hair,” Powell said.
Powell, who started practicing braiding her hair at the age of thirteen, followed in her mom’s footsteps, inspired by her mother’s resourcefulness and DIY approach to beauty. Mother Kearra Powell said, “As I watched my daughter start her business in early May 2024, I knew she would become successful. Her passion is very high driven and she doesn’t give up. I enjoy getting my hair done by her because she’s not only quick with her hands, but she also makes sure to be gentle, ensuring that I have an overall fantastic experience. Every client leaves feeling beautiful and satisfied.”
Cousin Enajiana Powell said, “I have been getting my hair done by Ahmorah for a while! I was one of her first clients, and over time she has improved so much. I love that I get to spend time with her and also give her the chance to get some extra practice. We try something new each time allowing her to use different techniques and work with various hair types. She’s so amazing at what she does. Her pricing is always affordable and she is very considerate about how much she charges.”
WO Grad. Ahnesty Powell said, “One way I’ve supported her business is letting her practice on me, which has allowed her to expand her portfolio on Instagram with new pictures. I also helped her find people to work with. I would let people know where they can discover her business and how they could set up an appointment with her. When booking an appointment she also makes sure to help me pick out the hair and gives me advice on which hair would be more suitable for my desired hairstyle. Seeing her step out of her comfort zone to communicate with people shows so much about her personality and growth. I had the best experience getting my hair done, she was very professional and considerate. She made sure I was comfortable and let me know what was going on throughout the whole process.”
Powell promotes her business through business cards and an Instagram account (@allure.amor.essence), showcasing her work and pricing. She provides various hair products and services, requiring clients to arrive with washed hair and extensions (if desired). The time mandatory for each styling session varies depending on the hairstyle, ranging from two to five hours.
Powell prioritizes client satisfaction, ensuring they are happy with the results. This page also allows her clients to communicate what hairstyle they’d like and when she has available bookings with pricing of no more than $70. Therefore, let Powell’s story remind us that the most ambitious dreams can blossom from the humblest locations. It’s about hard work, creativity, and connecting with people, that’s most important. Even when starting in a small space, your dreams can still grow and eventually make a big impact!
