WO wants half-day schedules on exam days

Things I would like to do after two exams:

  • Take a nap
  • Eat a snack
  • Talk to friends
  • Walk outside
  • Study at home

I wouldn’t say I’m the pickiest individual, but I can confidently say that no part of me wants to sit in an hour class and ¨study¨ right after I´m worn out from my long brain workout.

I really don’t think I’m being unreasonable. Half days on exams are not unheard of. In fact, West Ottawa is one of the only public high schools in Ottawa County that does not offer this well deserved half day for all exam days. To be a bit more persuasive, let’s hear what the students from other schools feel about having this luxury.

Julia Moore, a junior that goes to Holland Christian High School, said, “I like having half days when we have exams because you have more time to study for the other exams you have to take and also then you don’t have to go to class after being burnt out from taking an exam.”

Bryaden Koopam, a junior that goes to Zeeland East, said, ¨I feel like having half days on exams days is very nice. It gives us relief and time to chill and be able to prepare for the other exams the next day. It is nice to have a break.¨

I can also support the fact that it is not only the students that are in favor of half days for exams, but teachers favor half days, too..

Instructor Melody Holmes said, ¨Half days on exam days would be very helpful to the students because one can only focus so much for so long and I think that people give it their best and then rest. Just like in sports, people work hard and then rest, work hard and then rest.¨

West Ottawa has spoken. It’s time for WO leadership to make the obvious change.
