“I tore my labrum three days before tryouts at the last day of the Hope College tennis camp. It happened on a serve in a match, and I knew instantly that this would be a problem when I couldn’t lift my arm to take my shirt off. I had to sit out about two months of the season. In that time, I worked every day trying to get my arm back healed and strong enough to play the rest of the season. Most days I would watch the team practice then go to physical therapy. Over time, the PT helped a bunch, and I was able to start hitting again. I was able to come back to play just before conference play; the only problem was I couldn’t hit serves. Instead, I would underhand feed the ball. That was a major disadvantage for me because my serve was good. This also made me play super long matches most going into a third set with everyone else watching me. I beat everyone in the conference except for the kid from East Kentwood, who was an exchange student from Venezuela who surprised me. Later on, I played him in the final for conference and won and the final of regionals and won. I ended up being 13 and 3 on the year winning conference and regionals after not even thinking I was going to play this year,” Jr. Trevyn Bethke said.
