I sat down in the passenger seat after buying cookies from Crumbl for the first time ever. I breathed in the subtle scent they let off and felt their warmth on my palms as I held the small boxes. The combination of scent and warmth felt like walking into a cozy Mexican bakery full of fresh bread on a chilly November day. I’ve been wanting to try Crumbl for a while now, just to see if it’s really worth the hype, so I decided to give some of them a try and state my thoughts. The first three that I will be reviewing are rotated each week, so depending on the week, at least one of these will be available to buy. The rest are being switched out for different flavors on November 10th, 2024. I also warmed all of these up again because they’d gotten cold on the way home. In my opinion, cookies are much better warm.
Milk Chocolate Chip: 8/10
The Milk Chocolate Chip cookie was the thickest out of the three regulars. It has light brown, crunchy corners while the center is much softer. As I took my first bite, I immediately felt and heard the thin layer of crispiness on the outside of the cookie. However it is very sweet, so those who don’t enjoy an overly sweet cookie should steer clear of it. The inside is chewy and full of rich milk chocolate chips, not missing a spot. It has flaky salt on top but not a lot, honestly I could barely taste any salt. Overall I give it a good eight out of ten, but it could definitely be a ten if it wasn’t so sweet and a bit more salty.
Semi Sweet Chocolate Chunk: 9/10
The primary observation I made about this cookie was the shiny, melty chocolate chunks on top. The dough was very chewy and fudgy, it took a while to swallow the whole bite since it was so gooey that it stuck to the roof of my mouth and teeth. Some might think the dough was raw, but I think it was a perfect texture. The various chunks of dark chocolate on top and inside it were quite large as well. I’m usually not a fan of dark chocolate but I didn’t mind it on this cookie since it wasn’t so bitter. The salt showed up a bit more, and the corners were the only crispy part. This was actually my favorite cookie out of all the regulars because it was the least sweet compared to the other two, and had the best texture.
OG M&M Cookie: 6/10
The original M&M cookie was the crunchiest one. It is full of M&Ms, soft, chunky, and not too raw or overcooked. However, it had a cloying sweetness to it, which I didn’t like. It’s nice and thick, but a bit too large. In my opinion, half a cookie would be a great portion to consume in one sitting. Or buying the mini version of it. It wasn’t very moist either, and I like my cookies on the softer side, so I would change that as well. The taste itself reminded me of a Walmart cookie, not a bakery.
Butter Cake 10/10
This was definitely my favorite dessert out of all the ones I tried, though it isn’t a cookie like all the others, but more of a mini cake. Either way, it was perfect. Warm, gooey, soft, extra thick, and moist. The texture is spongy just like a cake, it reminded me of a tres-leches cake. However, the tres leches consistency is not originally part of the Butter Cake. Why? Because like I mentioned earlier, I reheated all the cookies since they had gotten kinda stiff on the way home. I only gave it about ten seconds, and when I opened the box, all the whipped cream on top had melted into the cake. I probably should’ve given it more thought before putting it in the microwave. Thankfully though, I did get to try the whipped cream before it melted. It tastes and looks like a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, feels smooth and airy and it has the perfect amount of sweetness. The crisp sugar crystals on the outside added an amazing and unique touch to it, really elevating the cake.
Peanut Butter Blossom 8/10
Personally, I always love a good peanut butter cookie. So this one also gets a high ranking. It’s buttery, soft, and the saltiness lingered in my mouth for a bit after swallowing. It is visibly sugar coated but not overly sweet. The fudge on top was delicious as well, probably dark chocolate. Expectedly, it did have a slight peanut butter scent. Similar to the Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chunk, Peanut Butter Blossom had a rather stretchy dough.
Strawberry Cupcake 7/10
The most piquant part of this cookie was its icing, that’s what stood out to me the most. It reminds me of strawberry cheesecake because of the sweet, yet sourish flavor it had. It is smooth and buttery, and I almost missed this, but the icing also has small, mushy pieces of strawberry in it. The cookie itself is nothing special, just an average sweet, soft, plain dough. It does get very sweet after a few bites though, so I wouldn’t recommend eating the whole thing in one sitting.
New York Cheesecake 8/10
Initially I was pretty excited for the New York Cheesecake cookie because I like cheesecake, and it did not disappoint. The only reason it gets an eight is because I feel like it could’ve been better. I did like how it was structured like a cheesecake, with the graham cookie flavored dough on the bottom and the cheesecake flavored icing on top. The dough tastes like a mix of graham crackers and brown sugar. It’s not too sweet or hard. Again, the dough kinda sticks to one’s teeth, but I don’t mind because that means it isn’t dry, and I’d pick a moist cookie over a dry one any day. The icing feels slightly grainy, looks like cream cheese and it’s a bit tangy, but also quite sugary. It has little graham cracker crumbs on top, which is a nice detail.
Oatmeal Raisin 5/10
I absolutely love oatmeal raisin cookies, so I was pretty disappointed. It wasn’t very chewy or flavorful, more like stiff and dry. I couldn’t really taste the salt, though it wasn’t overly sweet either, it just tasted plain. One thing I will say, though, is that the raisins seemed fresh and there was a decent amount of them. It was thicker than a regular oatmeal raisin cookie, but other than that it was average.
Pink Sugar 6/10
Pink Sugar tastes just as I expected it to. As the name and looks suggest, it tastes just like a frosted sugar cookie, but softer. The texture of the dough reminds me of a cupcake, it’s crumbly and a bit dry but still good. The icing is my favorite color, a soft, light pink. It’s sugary and firm, not runny or too stiff. Unfortunately, it is another overpoweringly sweet cookie, kind of tastes like a sip of sweetened condensed milk straight out of the can.
After trying nine, I’d say Crumbl should work on the sweetness of its cookies, but other than that I think they’re worth the hype, give them a try!
