Pacsun, Brandy Melville, Hollister… I sat on my phone trying to figure out where to shop next attempting to find something that expresses me. There are so many paths to find and expand your style. For example, in the 90s, people had big parachute pants, JNCO jeans, and bright colors. Trends are almost always fast-changing. First, it was stars, then bows, now it’s leopard print. What will it be next? Since fads move so quickly it can make it difficult for people to keep up. There will always be those interested in fashion even if it is called out as “so last year” or “so last month.” Regardless, if it is “out of style” some will still embrace it.           

   If you find clothes to be expensive there is a simple solution to find items that are a fraction of the cost. Holland is fortunate to have multiple thrift stores that offer their customers vintage and current trends. The popularity of these stores has skyrocketed lately.  For example, Ditto- benefits Holland Christian Schools, Harbor Humane Resale store benefits Harbor Human Society, and Paradise Bound Ministries to assist the locals of Guatemala. Thrifting allows shoppers to leave with more products and the good feeling of helping a good cause.

   Doing what you want regarding fashion helps you express yourself even if it is “out of style” Fashion is very cyclical, what goes around comes around. For example, animal prints are making a comeback. This iconic look has returned to the runways and your local brick-and-mortar stores as well as online shopping. Currently experiencing a revival from the 90s, animal prints bring stealth and power to fashion. Big cats and reptiles evoke the feeling of a mighty force, strength, and stamina to anyone who wears it. Leopard, tiger, and snake prints can be found in all areas of fashion from baby clothes to women’s fashion even down to nail designs. The return of this popular look from the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s can also be found at vintage shops. This look can help you project your confidence especially if you can’t speak it.

   You can always find a pair of jeans since there are so many from skinny jeans, elephant ear, wide leg, mom, dad, and boyfriend jeans to name a few. The descriptions are plenty. The most important thing about jeans is not only the look but also the comfort factor. Jeans are worth the money you spend because they become increasingly more comfortable and fashion-forward as they wear out. Ripped and holey jeans once were considered worn out but, today are viewed as prime. This goes for the real world too… one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

   Mall walking is less common today to learn about trends. The power of our cell phones offers us the world of fashion in our hands. Searching on various websites, influencers, magazines, and even billboards, has become a big part of discovering up-to-date looks. People tend to gravitate toward brands that inspire their style. For example, an outgoing style might enjoy exploring Aelfric Eden. A fitness nut would gravitate towards Lululemon, Nike, and more. Patagonia caters to the outdoor lovers. Everywhere you look you may see someone wearing a hint of every style. The important thing is to find your own.

   Who are you wearing is a common question you hear regarding fashion seen on musicians, artists, television, and movies; their looks are quick to gain popularity.

   A glance in any of these directions can quickly sum up the top trends of the day. Popstars and fashion are a long-held tradition, dating back decades.

   If you need inspiration for your outfits look in the direction of the fashion icons who walk the runways. Fashion shows and runways are often littered with many icons. Their clothes inspire their fans to mimic their look as well as their personal vibe, which can help you customize your character.

   Age and culture also influence fashion. Where you live, and the type of people who surround you affect your clothing choices. It’s obvious the look someone wears in the Midwest will be different than those on the East or West Coast. Likewise, people of different ages lean into their own looks. As mentioned above the popularity of thrifting includes discovering fashion finds that may have been donated by people of a different generation, but may appeal to a younger person. Inspired looks from the past are a fun way to reminisce.

   Wear the pieces that you love now, even if it’s only for you. Not buying into other thoughts and opinions it’s okay to wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident. With that being said you can always find someone with your fashion taste. Like-minded people will gravitate toward each other offering encouragement and appreciating one another.
